Fragments of an ordinary life 
Just to say I found your “Out the Front Door” essay in Short Reads moving and beautiful. My father died recently – fortunately, at home – and it had its own bizarre moment of my stepmother and her friend having to help a peculiar funeral aide load his body onto a gurney. We should all be so lucky as to have your mother’s tender and respectful exit. Thanks for writing this lovely piece.

Thank you Julie. A lot of the credit goes to the staff at the Bert Sutcliffe Ryman’s rest home in Auckland whose care and rituals made the exit a special time to remember.
